Tree Removal in Tight Situations

A  short sequence of photos taken in July 2011, showing the removal of two large thuja trees that had grown up between a building and a pond.

Thuja placata, Western red cedar, that were originally planted as shrubs for ground cover had developed into large trees. These were causing damage to the adjacent listed building and the banks of the mill weir at Magdalen College. The removal of the two trees had to be agreed to by Oxford City Council’s Tree Officer as they were within a conservation area.

Over two days a team of four men carefully dismantled the trees using modern rigging techniques to avoid damage to the building and the river wall. The oils used in the chainsaws are biodegradable so there was no risk to the marine habitat.

As can be seen the restricted space, proximity to both the building and the water meant that extra care had to be taken to ensure the safety of the structures and the men.

Did you know? Thuja is one of the few conifer species that readily regenerates even when you cut the branches back to the main stem.
