 | Local arboriculture experts, Jenks of Oxford Ltd, are warning people to keep a watch for a foreign species of caterpillar that could pose a health threat to humans and animals.
The Oak Processionary Moth caterpillar, which is found on oak trees, is covered with poisonous hairs which are fired from the body in self defence at any perceived threat. The hairs act as an irritant to humans and animals by getting trapped in the eyes, airways and bronchial tubes, causing rashes, swelling and sometimes breathing difficulties. Children, animals and asthma sufferers are especially at risk. The caterpillars also inflict serious damage on the oak trees they infest. Click for more details |
